Martin Luther King is one of the most prominent and accomplished men in the Civil RIghts Era. He was responsible for helping Rosa Park with the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington and the Selma to Montgomery March. His leadership and role in the community was unique. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 in regards to his role and place in fighting against racial discrimation, hate and segregation. What led to this was his, “I Have a Dream” speech that he delivered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963. Around 250,000 people attended this speech. MLK emphasizes how important it is that races have equal freedom, jobs and opportunities. Blacks have clearly been the minorities for centuries, and it is time for things to change. MLK fought and spoke his way into having new laws created.
During his March of Washington, the crowd and people behind him were so powerful that it pressured President John F. Kennedy to pass a law stating that all people, regardless of race, sexuality or religion would be allowed to vote without poll taxes or literacy tests. This finally gave blacks and other minorities the right to finally speak their mind and voice their opinions while being protected under the First Amendment.
Unfortunately, when MLK was getting ready for a dinner with a Memphis minister, he was shot in his cheek, breaking his jaw, vertebrae and damaging his spinal cord. He tragically passed away an hour after being shot. His legacy and mark he left on society will be remembered forever.
